All of us want to be happy and contented, to enjoy peace – a life in harmony with our self and those around us. In ancient history humanity had a much deeper connection with nature, one that revealed subtle knowledge of this world, our cosmos and all of creation. Their understanding of the mechanisms at play was reflected in how they designed and constructed their living spaces. The architectural science of Vaastu works with principles that honour the natural order and structure found in nature. Humanity intuitively chose sites and spaces which were harmonious and created harmony for those living there. Today, we can use the same principles that support harmonious living to powerfully transform our lives.
How to find or create a space like this? In ancient times the rishis – the seers and saints of India – gained deep insight into the cosmic laws creating and influencing creation. Through their meditations they found the principles of living in harmony with the five elements – earth, fire, sky (ether), water, air – and recorded their discoveries for future generations. Countless texts are dedicated to the art and science of architecture in the ancient scriptures - today known as Vaastu Shastra. The meaning of this term translates as “Vaastu” meaning “residing or dwelling” and “Shastra” meaning “scientific paper”. Through the exact implementation of these principles, Vaastu creates living and working spaces of true balance and harmony, which allow for much greater harmony and wellbeing in all areas of our life.
Sri Kaleshwar – A Modern Master of Vaastu
For thousands of years the Vedic knowledge – including Vaastu – has mostly been passed on in an oral tradition from master to student. To best understand and work with this knowledge system, it is important for students to both study the Vaastu literature and apprentice with a Vaastu master for several years. The application of Vaastu principles requires an appreciation and sensitivity as to the potential changes in a person’s life – this makes it important to train under the guidance of an experienced master teacher. In addition, to successfully implement Vaastu knowledge, clients often need to make substantial investments in order to rectify defects in their property, or possibly move to a new improved Vaastu dwelling. Employing a qualified vaastu consultant for advice and recommendations will most likely provide a combination of life-coach and architect!
Dr. Sri Kaleshwar (1973-2012) was a Vaastu Master for modern times. After studying the ancient teachings and consulting with learned masters, he practically implemented the teachings in his own ashram. This lead to Kaleshwar recognising the need to adapt and share the knowledge in a way that would help the problems of modern times. The truth and relevance of this approach was revealed through the experience of thousands of students, yogis, siddhas and devotees visiting and living on this site. In spite of his young age the depth and completeness of his knowledge has been acknowledged globally, and is shared through his transcribed talks and books. He taught and consulted thousands of people worldwide and helped them to change their lives in a positive way – often through changing the vaastu of their living environments.
“Good Vaastu creates the main things we need in life – peace, prosperity, power and happiness. Heartbreak is increasing in the world. That’s why the ancient knowledge needs to come out. If you understand it and experience its power, you can really help someone.” Sri Kaleshwar
Sri Kaleshwar preferred to teach only that which he had experienced, implemented and understood for himself and in his own life. In Penukonda, South India, he created his spiritual healing center according to these principles – a Vaastu paradise! Following his own experiences with Vaastu, Kaleshwar felt that there was no room for compromise when sharing or implementing this knowledge: “It’s better to live in a hut under a tree than to live in bad Vaastu.”
Vaastu Around The Globe
- The golden temple in Tirupati attracts millions of pilgrims
The architectural art and science of Vaastu began in India, but the principles are universal. It is possible to see these same principles in buildings around the world: temple sites and pyramids, and within Roman and Greek construction designs (the forerunners of western architecture). Countless sanctuaries and holy sites were built according to Vaastu principles and still today these places hold a huge attraction, pulling pilgrims and tourists from all over the globe. Everyone can feel the special impact these places have, whether or not they are aware of the underlying subtle energy laws. These sites radiate harmony, peace and beauty – providing sanctuary and nourishment for all who visit.
The spread and influence of Vedic knowledge can be seen across Asia. It lead to many shared spiritual beliefs and teachings between India and countries such as China, Japan and Tibet. The strong and vibrant history of Vedic knowledge has helped to lead to its longevity. In the 20th century, Eastern masters began to introduce this ancient, valuable knowledge to the West, attracting huge crowds and interest. The following decades have seen a growth in modern scholars and students of Yoga and the Vedas exploring these teachings. It forms an important part of our search for a deeper understanding of ourselves, and the world around us. The troubles of modern times are being helped through understanding and applying the remedies of Vedic knowledge.
The Five Elements
When exploring the differences between Vaastu and other styles of architecture, it is important to understand the principles behind Vaastu design and building.
The Maharishis of ancient India realized the deeper truths and mechanisms of creation through their intensive contemplation and meditative experiences. They discovered that the five elements – earth, fire, sky (ether), water and air – were the five pillars of creation. Each element holds particular qualities and power (Shakti), and all five are vital building blocks for creation to exist. The rishis discovered the unique qualities of each element and undertook practical studies, observing how the elements behave when placed in certain directions within a defined space or structure (with boundary). They discovered through working with the placement of elements, directions and boundaries, that the elemental energies played either positively or negatively on both the structures (e.g. fires, instability, damp, or, abundant crops, stable structures) and the people residing in that place (e.g. anger, disputes, depression, or, good fortune, longevity). From their insights they identified specific principles and were able to create ideal living spaces in balance with the elements. The lives of the inhabitants improved, and many problems disappeared.
The Maharishis wrote their discoveries about the perfect placement and arrangement of the elements in palm leaf manuscripts. For thousands of years, before paper and printing presses, palm leaves were used to preserve and share knowledge. Vaastu is one part of the ancient knowledge made available today with the help of preserved palm leaves. In addition, the art and science of Vaastu has been shared verbally being passed on through a lineage of master and pupil. In today’s world, there is wide reaching potential in the study and application of this practical and powerful knowledge. It provides one very effective solution for our huge ecological and societal challenges.
Vaastu For You
The Vaastu of our home affects each angle of our life, with or without our awareness. It is possible with the application of Vaastu knowledge to transform our life and wellbeing, and even to change our karma (destiny). Through good Vaastu, health, joy and success can more easily flow into your life, whilst weak, problematic Vaastu causes unnecessary obstacles, problems and discomfort.
Vaastu works with the formless, boundless energy of nature by creating property boundaries that ‘enclose’ the elemental energies. The boundary creates a grid-like structure in which the five elements have their natural place. The aim is to work with nature in an optimal way, allowing the highest expression of each element’s power and quality. The application of Vaastu principles creates changes in our life, and can be likened to a sailboat with the wind in its sails: Vaastu supports you to live your life with greater ease and success. With weak Vaastu – it is as if the wind blows towards you requiring much more power and endurance to realize your goals in life! Vaastu buildings are created to work in harmony with the power of the earth and the cosmos, naturally bringing supporting energies into your life.
Whether living in a small or large home, if your home has good Vaastu you will experience great peace and balance within it. The energies of nature will be able to flow into your life in a positive way bringing great support. Living and working in good Vaastu environments brings the experience of many blessings and a life of greater contentment and happiness.
